Let's Talk About Nutrition

Updated: Mar 23, 2021

Food is an important part of my overall well-being including my mental state. If I'm hungry, no one is happy, that's why I "save" everyone from hangry me and fuel up with nutrients that work for my body!

There are many blogs out there by specialists and average people like myself that go in-depth about what to eat, how much to eat and how often to eat, especially when you are trying to stay fueled through a hike or bike ride.

I love food and make sure to always have snacks on hand when I am out and about because I get hungry often when working hard.

When I started looking at what to eat before, during and after my adventure I became overwhelmed by the infinite number of articles and advice out there. There are articles on protein, fat and carb ratios. Articles on the precise quantity that should be consumed to have ultimate energy. Articles on what not to eat.

After weeks of trying to read about what everyone else thinks is right for me I started testing (and tasting) out different food options and pre and post-workout snacks.

I have a high metabolism and when I bike I need food, and lots of it, to fule me. I typically eat a full meal before a ride and have snacks on hand when hunger hits and energy starts to decline. I can eat anything as long as it isn't super spicy or acidic because it messes with my stomach. I really like eating a sweet potato or a simple peanut butter/almond butter sandwich with some Nutella. But I am also a meat-eater, and my body needs meat to function (Sorry vegetarian friends).

Aaron is the complete opposite. Just looking at anything bigger than a Honey Stinger goo pack or a banana while he exercises makes him sick. So when we ride together I eat a lot more than he does.

Recently I bought some Noosa Yoghurt. I ate half a container and went on a ride. For me, apparently, it's yogurt that gives me wings, not Red Bull. With the "right for me" ratio of carbs, fat and protein, the yogurt made me feel energized. If Aaron were to eat this right before an activity, he would end up on the couch and not the trail. He has to eat a few hours before a ride, where I can eat and go.

During our rides, I also need to snack. I seem to get hungry and low energy at faster intervals compared to Aaron. My favorite snacks are:

• Protein bars like ONE Bars and RX Bars

• Honey Stinger cookies and gels made with natural honey for a kick of sweetness

• Bananas

• Tangerines

• Trail mix - I love the sweet and salty combo with dark chocolate

• Gummy Bears as a special treat. My favorite are Albanese Gummi Bears

• Baby food packets are a great whole food and easy to store in a cycling jersey, backpack or pocket

I've recently found non-refrigerated yogurt packs I've been wanting to try on the road to see if they give me the same boost of energy. Have you tried these? If so, let me know and share with us what you like snack on when on the road?
